What is the Toxics Release Inventory and what can it tell me about chemical releases in my community?
The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is required by the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act. It requires manufacturers to report releases of more than 600 designated toxic chemicals to the environment (air, water, and land). In addition, they need to report off-site transfers (a transfer of waste for treatment or disposal at a separate facility), pollution prevention activities, and chemical recycling. Through the TRI, communities have information on the types and amounts of chemicals that are released into their environment. TRI provides citizens with accurate information about potentially hazardous chemicals and their use so that communities have more power to hold companies accountable and make informed decisions about how toxic chemicals are to be managed.
