Is it OK to put empty paint cans, Coleman fuel containers and other empty containers in the trash or recycling bin?

 NYSDEC encourages the recycling of all these items. If paint cans are to be recycled, the container must first be empty. Any free liquid should either be used or allowed to dry and then emptied. Oil based paints may be considered a hazardous waste and the NYSDEC hazardous substance unit should be contacted before disposal. Empty paint cans should be recycled with other tin cans. Ask your local municipality what their policy is for the acceptance of paint cans and if a local household hazardous waste collection has been scheduled.
