When , where and how do I file a complaint with the New York State
Division of Human Rights?
To file a complaint with the Division, you must file within one year of the most recent act of discrimination. You may file a complaint with the NYSDHR in person or by mail. The Division maintains conveniently located Regional Offices throughout the state. (See http://www.nysdhr.com). When you file, an Intake Officer will review the information you provide to decide if your situation is covered by the Human Rights Law. Among other things, the officer will ask you to identify witnesses and comparitors. Witnesses are individuals who saw or heard something that supports your claim of discrimination. Comparitors are other individuals who, in a situation similar to yours, were treated the same or differently by the Respondent.
