How do I apply for a job with New York State?
You apply for most State jobs by first taking an exam. Each exam announcement is for a specific job title, and provides information on the minimum qualifications necessary to take the exam. Read this carefully.
Some jobs require advanced levels of education.
Jobs may also require any of the following: experience in a particular field of work; a demonstration of proficiency at certain skills, such as typing; fluency in a second language; or a physical exam.
If you are qualified to take an exam, you must complete an application and submit it (usually to the Department of Civil Service) along with the non-refundable application processing fee. Your application will be reviewed to ensure that you meet the minimum qualifications.
Each examination announcement describes the test(s) which may include an oral test, performance test, physical test, or written test. Most exams include a written test given on specific announced dates, usually on Saturdays, at more than 30 test centers across the State. However, it may be possible to arrange an alternate test date for extenuating circumstances. You will be notified of the site to which you should report.
