 The agency is headed by a Commissioner. The incumbent is Glenn S. Goord, appointed by Governor Pataki and confirmed unanimously by the state Senate. Mr. Goord began his career in the Department more than a quarter-century ago as a counselor, and worked his way up through the ranks to become the first career employee to be confirmed as Commissioner.
