How are services developed for individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities who live in New York State, and how are they organized?
Services are developed for people who have developmental disabilities in New York State based on their specific needs and upon the choices they make about their goals in life.
The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) operates 13 Developmental Disabilities Services Offices (DDSOs) which seek to provide specifically designed, person-centered assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to most appropriately meet their needs. In partnership with the individuals served, families, staff, private providers and local governments, staff at these offices seek to improve the quality of life of the people they serve through the provision of quality, cost-effective services and supports. In addition voluntary not-for-profit providers whose programs are authorized and/or certified by OMRDD offer similar support and services statewide.
