Question How are services provided for people with mental retardation or developmental disabilities?

Answer The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) provides person-centered support and services for New Yorkers with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

In an individualized service environment, services are tailored to meet the specific needs of the person being served. Since each person is unique, that person should be the focus of the services designed with and for him or her. The individualized service environment provides the flexibility to most appropriately meet the needs of the people OMRDD serves.

Person-centered planning focuses on the capabilities and strengths of an individual in order to create a vision for a desirable future. It focuses on each person's gifts, talents, and skills, not on their deficits, and involves an ongoing process that enables lifelong growth and development. This approach brings together a diverse group of people who know and are committed to the individual with the disability. The group joins together with that person to take action so that changes will be accomplished through recognition of the goals and desires he or she has.
