What is the child safety seat law in New York? How do I learn the correct way to use a child safety seat?
New York law requires safety seat use for children under age four. Children under age four who weigh 40 pounds or more can ride in a booster seat with a shoulder harness. Children age 4, 5 and 6 must be protected by appropriate safety restraint devices or systems. Seats and other devices must be certified under Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards. Seats must be attached to the car by seat belts and the child must be secured in the
safety seat.
The DMV web site has information about the NYS seat belt law and child safety seat law. The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee web site has safety information about child safety seats.
