Question If I move to NYS, how do I get a NYS driver license and a vehicle registration?

Answer Within 30 days after you become a resident of NYS, you must exchange your driver license and vehicle registration from another location for a NYS driver license and vehicle registration. If you are not a resident of NYS, you are not required to exchange your driver license or vehicle registration.

The DMV web site has information for drivers who move to NYS from another US state or from Canada and for drivers from outside the US or Canada.

The DMV web site has the instructions to register a vehicle from another state.

The DMV web site also has information about the defintion of 'resident' that applies to driver licenses and vehicle registrations.
