What is a brownfield?

 Brownfields are contaminated and abandoned properties. They can be found in big cities, small towns, suburbs and rural areas. Left untouched, brownfields pose environmental, legal and financial burdens on communities and taxpayers. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation works with other state and federal agencies, local governments, developers, and businesses to clean up these sites so that the land can once again be put to useful purposes. Many cleaned up brownfields sites have been used to develop businesses, parks and recreational areas, and housing. Remediated brownfield sites also create jobs, improve the local economy, and boost neighborhood pride.
