What Is The Big Tree Register? How does my community nominate a tree for the New York State Big Tree Register?
New York State's Big Tree Register is maintained by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as an effort to recognize trees of record size and to promote an interest in their care and preservation. The State Register lists only native and naturalized species and does not include hybrid species. The authority for determining eligible species is the 1978 edition of the USDA Forest Service publication entitled Checklist of US Trees Native and Naturalized prepared by Elbert L. Little, Jr. For further information about the state and federal programs, please visit DEC’s Big Tree Register web page.
