What is the New York State DEC Environmental Navigator?
Environmental Navigator is the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's new GIS interface program, which uses interactive mapping of areas and facilities of environmental interest. When facilities and natural resources are displayed in layers on a map, it becomes possible for scientists, engineers, and other experts to see ways in which the various resources might harm or benefit each other. For instance, when one layer of a map shows the location of a manufacturing facility and another layer shows all the wetlands near that facility, the two layers can be combined to form a new map that makes it easier to visualize and protect our wetlands while promoting enconomic growth. DEC’s Environmental Navigator web page contains graphical data that the public can use to display information about wildlife, environmental facilities, transportation systems, and other important resources in New York State.
