Question What is the difference between a modern roundabout and a traffic circle?

Answer Three basic principles distinguish modern roundabouts from traffic circles. Roundabouts are characterized by low speeds for entering and circulating traffic; they follow the 'yield-at-entry' rule (approaching vehicles must wait for a gap in the circulating flow before entering); and they should be designed so that the speed of vehicles is restricted to no more than 30 mph within the roundabout. The NYSDOT web site discusses roundabouts in detail on its site.
