Question What should I do before I hire a moving company?

Answer For moves entirely within New York State, find out if the mover is licensed by the New York State Department of Transportation; for moves between New York State and another state, find out if the mover is licensed by the Federal Highway Administration. To be licensed, movers must meet insurance, safety and financial standards.

For information about an intrastate mover, call the New York State Department of Transportation (1-800-786-5368); for information about an interstate mover, call the United States Department of Transportation (1-800-828-5000). NYSDOT's web site explains how to file a complaint against a mover.
