Are there rules for how highway work zones are set up in New York State?

Yes. Standards and drawings of samples of traffic control devices (concrete barrier, arrow boards, barrels or cones, for example) that apply to any public highway in New York State are found in the New York State Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices or MUTCD. The MUTCD, which also known as NYCRR Volume 17B, can be purchased from the West Group (1-800-328-4880).

Additional requirements for work done under New York State Department of Transportation construction contracts are detailed in the Standard Specifications for Construction and Materials that can be purchased from NYSDOT's Plan Sales Unit (518-457-2124).
