What is the difference between the New York State Commission of Correction and the New York State Department of Correctional Services?

 The New York State Commission of Correction is a regulatory agency that oversees all state prisons and local correctional facilities (county jails), police lock-ups and secure detention facilities of the Office of Children and Family Services in New York State, advises the Governor on policies and programs for improving the administration of correctional facilities, promulgates rules and regulations establishing minimum standards for the care, custody, treatment, supervision, and discipline of all persons confined in State and local correctional facilities, inspects facilities to ensure adherence to standards, investigates inmate deaths, examines facility operations to ensure adherence to federal and state laws and recommends ways to assist in the development of facility programs for inmates. This information is part of the Commission of Correction's Mission Statement.

 The New York State Department of Correctional Services is primarily responsible for the confinement and habilitation of inmates sentenced to state correctional facilities.
